5th XI cricket - have your say...

Now we are approaching the halfway point of the season the Cricket Committee wanted to provide an update on 5th XI cricket.

It’s been incredibly positive that we have been able to get a 5s side out several times this season. Last season we were struggling to field four sides at times.

This increased availability across the club has meant that people who were used to playing in any side have found, in strong availability weeks, that they are playing in a lower side than they have previously. This is reflected in particular in the strong league position the 4s find themselves in.

Longer term decisions about the 5s are something for the winter but to commit to league cricket, which we know some are keen for the Club to do, we would need to be confident the 5s are a viable prospect for an entire season. That means strong availability for the rest of the season so please do keep being available and playing.

We have had feedback from those playing in the 5s that the standard of cricket they have been playing and, in particular, the facilities at Waterers Park has not been particularly good. The chances of securing a fixture for the 5s is always increased if we have a ground and ultimately Waterers is the best ground we can guarantee that is available each week. However, it is important we listen to that feedback and wanted to present the choices for the 5s for the remainder of the season.

- We can continue to seek to secure home cricket at Waterers or another home ground, if we can find one. This is the best chance of securing regular 5s cricket.

- We can look for away fixtures only. This may improve the quality of the grounds we play at (this is not guaranteed) but could mean in weeks we cannot find an opposition we don’t have a 5s game.

- Have a mix of home and away games for the rest of the season. This has the benefits of meaning we play at a range of grounds but comes with the downsides of the above options. For example, we could look to play at home one week at Waterers on a poor pitch and then struggle to find an opposition with a ground the following.week.

It would be hugely helpful if we had some further "on the day" offers of support. The Cricket Committee is happy to handle the in the week administration for the rest of the season but having people to skipper and help organise on the day is a stumbling block to getting the game on.

Offering to help doesn’t mean you will only be selected in the 5s but it helps to know who is happy to help if they are playing in that side – we don’t want 11 players but no one willing to help organise the game.

W&HCC XI v Seymours - Thursday 29 June - 6.00pm start

This Thursday (29 June), a Woking and Horsell XI will be taking on our club sponsors in a T20 match at our ground in Brewery Road. The bar will be open from 6.00 so why not come down and watch some cricket. It would be fantastic to get a large crowd for this one and thank Seymours for their support. We hope to see you there.

W&HCC Race Night - Saturday 8 July

We will be running a Race Night at the clubhouse on Saturday 8th July after our league matches (approximately 8.00 start).

For those of you have not attended a Race Night before, pre-recorded horse races are played and…

Guests pay to be owners of the horses and jockeys (see below!!)
Guests can also place tote bets on as many horses as they like.
After each race the winner is announced and the owner of the winning horse receives a prize.
For tote ticket holders, half of the total bet on that race is divided between the winning ticket.

How can I buy a horse/jockey/sponsor a race?

We are looking for eight companies to sponsor a race at just £20 each which will help advertise their name.
We need people to “buy” a horse at just £5 each.
We need people to buy a jockey at just £3 each.
Anyone who sponsors a race or buys a horse gets free entry.

100th duck Sweepstake

To continue our 100th year celebrations at Brewery Road we are having a 100th duck sweepstake, all senior teams are included in this (Saturday, Sunday and Midweek). Rules are simple pick the date and which side you think will achieve the 100th duck of the season. We are currently on 17 (Seb will keep this number updated on social media). Karaoke Night 3rd June

We are hosting a karaoke night as part of our Centenary Year Celebrations on Saturday 3rd June, tickets are £5 to be paid on the door this includes a free drinks token.
