A message from the cricket committee May 2023

Now that we are a few weeks into the season the cricket committee wanted to share an update on availability and plans going forward.

First the negatives. It's been incredibly wet to the extent that due to a blocked drain Westfield is still unavailable, although we are expecting to be playing cricket there later this month. The extremely bad weather has also impacted the availability of Council grounds as alternatives to Westfield or as a third ground for 5s games. Brewery Road has also been impacted with cancelled games and training sessions. Thank you to those who have tried to get games on - if you can help with ground prep do let us know as it all helps to get games and training on.

Now the positives. We have more people wanting to play cricket than we have had in years. To give it some perspective, in the first league weekend we were selecting players in the 4s who had been front line 2s players at various points in the previous couple of seasons. We also managed to get nearly 30 people playing cricket on a Bank Holiday Monday.

What this does mean is that, at the moment, demand is outstripping supply for spaces. We are looking at options to get more cricket on but the wet weather and unavailability of Westfield has made this difficult. It should become easier to secure a home ground, crucial for getting a 5s fixture on, in the weeks ahead once Westfield is up and running. The likely first possible date for a 5s fixture is 27 May.

We also need help to get a 5s fixture on though. Thank you to those who have already agreed to help book grounds or find fixtures but we will need more help.

Be it administration, helping on the day, making a tea, if you think you can help please let Tom, Haresh or Phill know ASAP. It doesn't have to be every week but without help we won't get these games on.

The other thing that helps with getting a 5s game on is early availability across all sides. Please do let a captain know your availability ASAP for each week (or further ahead if you know it) and how much you expect to be around this season. Tuesday afternoon is too late for us to be deciding whether to put a 5s game on - we need to be starting the process on Monday and that begins with have we got enough players.

It's been a frustrating start of the season for everyone but hopefully we all get on the pitch soon.

James Morley Memorial - Sunday 30th April

Just a reminder that the annual James Morley Memorial will be held at the club on Sunday 30 April from 2.00 giving you the opportunity to have a few drinks and catch up with some old friends, including one or two “special” guests. It would be great to see you then. The Sunday XI will be at home to Ploughmans CC.

100th anniversary of Brewery Road - Sunday 23 April!

Sunday 23 April is the 100th anniversary of the first ever game at Brewery Road and to celebrate we are holding not one but two interclub games!

The juniors kick us off on Sunday with the under 10s and 11s starting their game at 10.00. The seniors follow that with a thirty over game at 1.30 when hopefully we will see one or two "former" players take to the field.

The BBQ will be on from about 12.30 and the bar will be open from lunchtime so please come down and celebrate our 100th birthday. The weather forecast is much better for this week and the cricket season is nearly here.

W&HCC Senior Training Day - Saturday 15 April

Our annual Seniors Training Day will take place on Saturday 15 April from 2.00-5.00pm. Gareth Townsend, our new coach, will be in attendance.

All senior players are encouraged to attend, with three friendlies due to take place the following Saturday. New players are very welcome to come along. If you would like more details please contact your team captain or our Cricket Chairman Phill West.
