The 2009 league got off to a great start with an emphatic bonus point win over Churt. The weather stayed kind as we started the 2009 league on another great pitch prepared by Couch. Our new found scorers in Morgan and Tristan carried on learning from Erika and I finally managed to win a toss and had no hesitation in selecting to bat. With Peter Murphy providing his services as umpire (Thank You) our opening pair of Jan and Ian once again established themselves with yet another solid opening stand of 45 before Ian tried the sweep and was unfortunately out LBW.
A welcome return for new father Toby Green saw W&H move swiftly to 116 before a middle order collapse saw us slump to 144/7. With James being the only middle order batsman showing some resolve in came Qais “The smasher” Nawaz. In 8 short over’s Qais ably supported by the lower order took us from 144/7 to a very competitive 210/9, with Tony adding insult to injury on the last ball when the Churt captain brought all his fielders in to save the single only to have Tony deposit their opening bowler into the trees for the maximum. Jan’s 59(77) and Qais’ 53(24) being the highlights of our innings.
The Churt openers quickly raced to 24 off the initial 6 over’s but then a ham string problem brought the end of Roger’s opening spell. I stepped in and managed to snag the one opener. Tony found his rhythm and their run rate slowed. Qais “you can’t keep me out the game” Nawaz was then thrown the ball and immediately tasted success as we managed to grab their other opener just as he was starting to look dangerous, and then a couple of over’s later grabbed his second for the day. I continued to bowl my full quota and with Ian taking over from Qais we managed to stifle their start with some accurate bowling. Ian 1/25(10) and I 1/26(10) combining very well for our 20 over’s. Jan, not finished with his league debut then proceeded to bowl really well and with the opposition realising they needed to up the tempo found himself with enviable figures of 3/41(10). Tony was brought back for some death bowling and with great discipline forced the Churt tail to try one too many expansive shots and picked up their last remaining batters ending with an impressive 2/33(7).
In last weeks report I mentioned we needed to take our chances and was really proud of the effort shown by the whole team during our defence of our total. If our middle order can fire I think we will be very competitive during the season.
Our joint men of the match were Jan Kreder and Qais Nawaz.
Again a special thanks to all who came down and supported us, it really is great seeing familiar faces around the park and adding to that a good win bodes well for us this season.
Cheers for now,
Ryan Pogson (1st XI Captain)
