With the end of the season in sight and our promotion aspirations still firmly in our grasp we hosted SRK at Brewery road. With another excellent pitch prepared by Couch we were keen to win the toss and bat and set a large total for SRK to chase, the toss though did not go our way and it seems my winning skills in that department have deserted me.
SRK went into bat and although we bowled well they ticked over quite comfortably. A double bowling change saw our prime bowling pair of Honey and Meyer apply loads of pressure and soon both openers were on their way back to the pavilion. With Damo snagging Mr. Tudor (who normally fancies a little of Mr. Honey) we really felt we were in with a chance of restricting SRK to a score below 180. Damo and Ian bowled superbly and the rest of us bowlers found our rhythm, and after their in-form batsmen tried to pull a Shazad bouncer (with no helmet) and found himself with a very big gash on his head, SRK were never really back in the batting game. 169/9 was the final total and a great opportunity for us to win. Some moments of great fielding and some serious lack of judgment meant though I felt they still got 30 more than they should of.
Tea was postponed as the game had started at 12 and the tea ladies were not informed. Jan and Tom strode confidently out with Jan snorting fire and determined to hit everything that came his way into ORBIT. He successfully sent their openers out of the attack in 4 short overs as SRK turned to their in form spinner Latty. A flurry of wickets once again saw W&H well under par and 4 down, at 54/4 this is the 4th game in succession were we have been under 60 and 4 down. It is something we will need to address URGENTLY. Toby and I then tried to settle the ship with Toby batting really well in trying circumstances. With SRK forced into bowling their strike bowler his full compliment we knew we had a good chance if we batted sensibly. We saw W&H through to tea and then continued slowly after tea. Toby chased loosely just before his 50 again but his 48 was invaluable. Qais then joined me and I just comfortably took the singles as the Nawaz "show" moved us swiftly to 155. Qais was then bowled as a nervous flutter settled on my stomach as I knew if we wanted the bonus point we could not afford another wicket, 5 runs later and an idiotic shot saw my hard work end on 32. A brief panic as I walked off but our ever faithful tail once again stepped us and knocked of the runs needed for a win against SRK that was well overdue.
Again some dropped catches, again 4 wickets down far to early but again the W&H spirit shone through and we took another step towards promotion. This weekend sees us play Alleyn and Honor oak, who are placed 2nd. A bonus point win here and we are really and truly in the race!
Thank you to our umpire, our groundsman, our scorer and the tea ladies.
I hope to see as many people as possible down this Saturday as it is the 1st XI's last home game.
Cheers for now.
Ryan Pogson (1st XI Captain)
