Welcome to the WHCC Juniors

Page last updated - 23rd March 2023

W&HCC is committed to introducing cricket and hopefully creating a love for the sport into the lives of as many youngsters as possible. We encourage this by holding age specific coaching sessions, playing practice & competitive matches, encouraging team-work and developing the “spirit of cricket” across all our Junior age groups.

Children can join when they are in year 1 at school but unless an age group is full, we welcome boys and girls of any age who want to play cricket at a friendly, local club.  Our younger age groups are traditionally heavily subscribed so we do recommend you ask to go on our waiting lists for future years.

We also have a growing dedicated Girls section covering U8 to U15 but girls can also be integrated with the boys age groups sides at any age. This will be our second season of girl’s hardball cricket at U12 and U14 and we also have softball sides at U9, U11 and U13. Girls are welcome at U6 and U7 into our mixed groups.

For 2023, we currently have spaces in our U8, U13 and U16 and U17 groups where some previous cricketing experience would be helpful. We also have some spaces in our dedicated girls age groups, especially U8-U11 Girls.

The Juniors cricketing season runs from the end of April to late July. Each Junior age group is allocated a slot for or summer training on either a Monday, Wednesday or Friday evening each week. Girls training takes place on a Monday evening.

Most training sessions take place at the Club’s attractive Brewery Road ground, where parents can watch their budding young cricketers exercising, while relaxing in the evening sun. Regardless of age group we want our Juniors to have fun, in a safe and happy atmosphere, whilst developing their sporting skills

From U8 onwards, matches are played in the Surrey Junior Cricket Championship, playing matches against other local clubs. All our age groups have two teams entered at different levels so that the games are as evenly matched as possible. From U10, boys start using a hardball and each year the playing conditions become more and more like adult cricket such that by U14 they are using a full-size cricket ball and by U15 playing on a full-length pitch. By this time, juniors are encouraged, where ability appropriate, to play for the senior teams at the Club.

Most matches take place on Sunday mornings with some on weekday evenings. As well as at Brewery Road, we play home matches at various locations round Woking as with 24 teams in the Junior age groups from our club alone, pitches are in very high demand!

We also hold indoor winter nets and training sessions from late January for each Juniors year group.

The WHCC Juniors section is very much a family affair and we encourage the whole family to be part of the Club.  Every parent and carer is invited to play an active role if they wish which may include coaching, assisting a coach, umpiring, scoring, being behind the bar or on the BBQ or helping out in a host of other areas behind the scenes. Throughout the summer there is usually a Men’s 1XI or 2XI game on a Saturday at the club. Support for the team is always very welcome and the bar is usually open from late afternoon.

Our current Juniors Chairman is Paul Manly and he is supported by a team of volunteer Age Group Managers, Coaches (all of whom are DBS checked), and non-cricketing volunteers as well as a number of our own talented older Juniors who help out with the coaching of the younger age group children. Where necessary we also bring in external coaches to supplement our training resources.

We look forward to welcoming you to our club.
